At the end of 2023, I was honoured to be part of a select group from the graduating class of Spatial Design, Auckland University of Technology (AUT), to showcase our capstone projects on the corner of Nuffield Street. My role involved the design and fabrication of the structures that displayed the student project models.

Tasked with designing and fabricating the exhibition structures, I began with a set of identical timber frames and reimagined how they could be pulled apart and reconstructed to suit each student’s project model. Though the material was the same, no two frames ended up alike—each was reshaped to mirror the individuality of the work it supported. What started as uniform became a collection of distinct structures, each tailored to celebrate the projects on display.

To complement the timber frames, translucent paper was specifically used as a backdrop for each frame display. The delicate quality of the paper diffuses the natural light, creating an elegance that highlights the unique features of each project, drawing attention to the intricate details and craftsmanship of the models while softening the overall look of the exhibition.

The combination of the repurposed timber frames and translucent paper created a balance between structure and light, inviting viewers to engage deeply with the displayed models.

This exhibition was not only a platform to showcase our collective hard work but also an opportunity to foster community engagement and encourage a dialogue about the surroundings and potential possibilities of the space.
