Chandelier design and Fabrication
New Idea
Incorporating the rich history of Auckland's longest-surviving department store, which dates back to its establishment as a draper and millinery shop by Marianne Smith in 1880, this project celebrates the enduring legacy of retail in New Zealand.
Inspired by the silhouette of an award-winning dress from 1903, featured in the Australian monthly magazine New Idea, the chandelier is a combination of existing visual external components. Its design mimics the elegant contours of the dress, symbolizing the pivotal role it played in solidifying Smith and Caughey's reputation as a fashion leader.
The chandelier becomes a mesmerizing focal point for all visitors, inviting them to pause and appreciate the artistic fusion of history, fashion, and architectural beauty that defines this iconic department store.
